Matt David Johnson, the second born in a family of ten, has been working on-and-off in film and television for over twenty years. Born in Vancouver, after formal study at the Gastown Actors Studio, he appeared in commercials for Miller Light, Honda, Jeep Patriot, Toyota, Bud Light, and has been featured on Disney’s So Weird, Stargate SG-1 and Psych. Between 2003 and 2006 he hosted his own weekly community events calendar CTV's The Best of BC with Matthew Johnson, co-producing and hosting over 150 spots for the network. Other credits include co-screenwriter of the world's first interactive web series Suite218.com (Telus E-World Award Winner). In 2015, his script The War of the Wills was shortlisted for the Crazy 8’s Film Festival. In 2016, he completed his short film The Dishwasher, which has earned international attention.  Matthew has a certificate in Business Administration and is winner of the Lucille Fisher Award Scholarship for Outstanding Writing from Capilano University. Matthew resides in Toronto were he's continuing development on several projects.



The Dishwasher

In the autumn of 2015, our short proposal The Dishwasher was submitted to the Storyhive Digital Shorts Initiative in British Columbia, vying against 150 other prospective teams for a chance to win a $10,000 production grant. Through a combination of public voting and jury selection, our project was awarded along with thirty other finalists across BC and Alberta, in projects ranging from live-action film, from documentaries and experimental animation. Post-production completed in February, and upon completion entered a pivotal second stage of public voting and jury selection where our project was awarded the distinction of Top Winner for BC. Since it's completion, The Dishwasher has received award recognitions in California and Europe, including recent a nomination for Best Score at the Kerry International Film Festival, and a Nomination for Best Director at The Short Film Awards in New York. It's also recently been inducted into AirCanada's Encore Inflight Short Film Program. Written and directed by Matt David Johnson,  The Dishwasher features original music from sibling/ singer-songwriter Alexz Johnson and an accompanying composition from Marko Koumoulas and Matthew Chung. Coyote Mountain

Coyote Mountain is both a comedic, three-episode web-series that takes place within the fictional Coyote Mountain National Park in Canada that follows the daily activities of forest ranger Paul Henry (Drew Scott, The Property Brothers), Gloria Morning (Jackie Blackmore, Supernatural) and their newest recruit (Gary Gill, Endgame) as the first day of the season commences. Inspired from real-life stories told by park rangers.  

Georgie & The Golden Egg

Vycast Entertainment launched the world's first interactive, internet sitcom Suite218.com. Viewers were asked to vote following every episode between potential storylines, with the majority seeing their chosen story arc immortalized on camera. Six episodes were produced. Winner of the E-world award for Best Entertainment Website of the Year.  Directed by Kevin Shortt.

Crow Salvaged Goods was an experimental urban furnishing store offering a diverse selection of custom wood furnishings, primitive antiques, industrial furniture, paper goods, pendant jewelry  and construction materials— a designer’s delight. Crow was located at 1243 Kingsway, Vancouver, just one block west of Knight. Hours of operation were Tuesday to Saturday, 10 to 4.

Charley's Aunt 

Charley's Aunt is a three-act farce written by Brandon Thomas, and included as part of the 2010-2011 season for the Stage 43 Theatrical Society. Production was staged at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Port Moody, British Columbia for a 2-week engagement. Hobson's Choice

Hobson's Choice is a three-act classic dramedy written by Thomas Brighouse in 1915. Production was remounted by the Stage 43 Theatrical Society at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in 2010. The Front Page

The Front Page, written by former Chicago reporters Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, was first produced in 1928. Centred around a controversial hanging of an presumably innocent man, the play has been adapted for cinema several times. Produced by the Ensemble Theatre Company in 2008 in Vancouver and directed by Tariq Leslie, this month-long run at the Pacific Theatre featured and ensemble cast. Barefoot in the Park

This much-loved romantic classic was written by Neil Simon in 1963 and ran for a 2-week run at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam, in 2009. Barefoot in the Park was directed by Cindy Petersen and produced through the Stage 43 Theatrical Society. (Pictured here is Leanne Kuzminski as Corey, and Matt David Johnson as Paul Bratter.)


Y.F.G. Comedy, 1993-1996

The Y.F.G. Comedy Troupe was a sketch ensemble group that originated in Maple Ridge, BC. Spawned by a collective passion for theatre and entertainment, this group performed several shows in and around the Vancouver area, including many sold-out performances in their hometown.
